Strategy as Filter: Why Boundaries Enable Better AI Experimentation
Unlimited experimentation sounds liberating but produces chaos. The best AI experimentation programs are not the ones with the most freedom — they are the ones with the clearest strategic boundaries.
Strategy acts as a filter, not a constraint. It tells you which experiments to run (the ones aligned with your competitive position), which to skip (the ones that are interesting but irrelevant), and which to scale (the ones that proved the hypothesis).
Companies without strategic filters for AI experimentation end up with dozens of disconnected pilots, no clear wins, and a growing skepticism about AI value. Companies with clear filters run fewer experiments but achieve more meaningful results.
